Former Australian cricketer David Warner, who, after retirement, plays T20 franchise cricket across the globe, went past Virat Kohli's all-time run-scoring record in T20s. The southpaw achieved this feat while playing The Hundred tournament, representing London Spirit. Now, the opener is the fifth highest run-getter in T20 cricket.
It was a typical blistering innings from Warner, who scored 71 in 51 balls to go past Kohli's record. However, despite his gritty knock, the Spirit fell short of the 164-run target and lost the game to Manchester Originals. The Aussie player walked away with accolades owing to the massive record he achieved.
Now, in 419 T20 matches, the southpaw has amassed 13,545 runs at an average of 66.80 and a good strike rate of above 140. Warner has also notched eight centuries and a colossal 113 fifties, with the best being an unbeaten 135. This is the first time the veteran has come to play The Hundred, and up until now, he has shown consistency by scoring 150 runs in only three games that he played for Spirit.
David Warner & Virat Kohli - similar T20 batters
One thing common between Virat Kohli and Warner is their playing styles in T20 cricket. Both try to take time before accelerating. Both are anchor batters in the shortest format of the game. While Warner's strike rate is a touch higher than the Indian batter's, he also loves to stay till the end, like Kohli often does. The Indian batter has scored 13,543 in 414 matches & 397 innings at a good average of 41.92, & a strike rate of 134.67, with nine hundred & 105 fifties, with a best score of an unbeaten 122 - his only T20I ton against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022 event.
The highest run-getter in T20 cricket is Chris Gayle, who changed the way the shortest format was played by bludgeoning sixes at will. He has played 463 games, scoring 14,562 runs in 455 innings at an average of 36.22 and at a strike rate of 144.75, with 22 centuries & 88 fifties, with a best score of an unbeaten 175 coming against Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL season. This also happens to be the highest ever score in IPL.
