IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill Overtakes Sunil Gavaskar, Don Bradman’s Record Still Safe

Shubman Gill has not only impressed as a leader but also delivered with the bat in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He is the top scorer of the series so far with 743 runs in nine innings.

He has broken a lot of records along the way. His latest achievement came in the fifth Test at The Oval. When Gill reached 11 runs in the first innings of the fifth Test, he broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series.

Gavaskar had scored 732 runs in the 1978-79 series against the West Indies.

With 743 runs and counting, Shubman Gill now tops the list for most runs by an Indian Test captain in a single series. He’s gone past names like Gavaskar and Virat Kohli.

  • 732 - Sunil Gavaskar vs West Indies, 1978/79

Don Bradman’s Record Out of Reach For Now

The world record still belongs to the great Don Bradman. In the 1936-37 Ashes series, Bradman scored 810 runs in just five matches, a record that still stands.

Gill had a chance to get close, but a run-out on 21 at The Oval hurt those hopes. With one innings left in the match, he still needs 68 runs to break Bradman’s record. It's a tall task, but not impossible.

Gill also came close to breaking Gavaskar’s overall Indian record for most runs in any Test series. Gavaskar had scored 774 runs in four Tests against the West Indies in 1971. If Gill gets another good knock, that record could also be under threat.
